santa will find you a/k/a the christmas music post

13 12 2008

one of the things i love about the holiday season is busting out the christmas music.  i’ve got around 60 or so christmas cds ranging from christina aguilera,  boyz II men, nsync and mariah carey to michael mcdonald, jewel, harry connick jr and brian mcknight to mercyme, chris isaak, kirk franklin and the trans-siberian orchestra… and all points in between.

each year i add to my christmas music collection by about 3 or 4 new purchases. i have spanned the musical spectrum with this year’s new additions, which are sarah mclachlan’s wintersong, brian setzer orchestra’s christmas rocks, faith hill’s joy to the world and rahsaan patterson’s the ultimate gift.  all are worthy of your $8 if you are so inclined.

among last year’s additions was a jewel of an artist i discovered named mindy smith.  she’s not necessarily a new artist, with two other albums already to her credit, but her  2007 release my holiday is what introduced me to her.

mindy’s voice is absolutely beautiful and I would best describe her music as soulful americana pop.  there are definite traces of artistic influences by the likes of patty griffin, alison krauss and emmylou harris floating throughout many of her songs, and alison krauss actually appears on the album, contributing her characteristic angelic harmonies to “away in a manger”.  i absolutely love it.

when i come across something like this that i really enjoy i love to share it, and actually gave many copies of this album as gifts last year.  if you’re looking for recommendations for new christmas music, “my holiday” is one of my favorites and would be a great addition to your collection.

here is one of my favorite songs from the album, “santa will find you”, along with a video of mindy doing a live acoustic performance of the title track.  hope you enjoy!
