a high view of God

9 06 2009

i am totally ripping this from mark batterson’s incredible book, in a pit with a lion on a snowy day.  it is a great piece that i want to share and hopefully challenge you with. as a side note, if you are some one who has found themselves in the middle of a transition, you need this book!

according to a.w. tozer, the most important thing about you is what comes to mind when you think about God.

“… the most portentous fact about any man is not what he at any given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart conceives God to be like…  were we able to extract from any man a complete answer to the question, ‘what comes to your mind when you think about God?’ we might predict with certainty the spiritual future of that man. (a.w. tozer, the knowledge of the holy)

how you think about God will determine who you become.  you aren’t just a byproduct of “nature” and “nurture”.  you are a byproduct of your God-picture.  and that internal picture of God determines how you see everything else.

most of our problems are not circumstantial.  most of our problems are perceptual.  our biggest problems can be traced back to an inadequate understanding of who God is.  our problems seem really big because our God seems really small.  in fact, we reduce God to the size of our biggest problem.

tozer said a “low view of God… is the cause of a hundred lesser evils.”  but a person with a high view of God “is relieved of ten thousand temporal problems.”

“I don’t think the way you think.
The way you work isn’t the way I work.”
God’s Decree.
“For as the sky soars high above earth,
so the way I work surpasses the way you work,
and the way I think is beyond the way you think. – isaiah 55:8-9 (the message)

i can certainly attest this principle to be true in my own life.  i can look back on specific instances when how i approached or walked through a particular situation in my life was in direct correlation to how i perceived God in that season of my life.  i am thankful that seasons change and we grow, thus providing opportunities for our understanding and perception of God in our lives to increase as well.  there are things that happened to me in the past which, were they to play out again today, would not produce the same response from me, primarily because of who i am continually becoming as a direct result of what i continually and increasingly understand about God.

what about you?  how has your approach to life been altered by your perception and understanding of who God is over the years?

what it was really all about a/k/a perception a/k/a less like scars

29 12 2008

2008 is winding down… lots of thoughts today.

what did 2008 bring to you? more importantly, how do you perceive what 2008 brought to you and how has your perception shaped your response?

“God is in the business of strategically positioning us in the right place at the right time.  but the right place often seems like the wrong place, and the right time often seems like the wrong time.”  –  mark batterson from in a pit with a lion on a snowy day (a book which i will be referring to a lot in the coming months)

sure, it’s cliche to say ‘perception is reality’, but it’s quite often true.  but the fact that your perception can often shape your reality can be dangerous, especially if your perception is skewed in any way.  if your perception is tainted, your reality will be twisted.

i love this song by sara groves called ‘less like scars’.  the essence of the song is that “time” is the great equalizer, and the perspective that it brings will often shine a light on what you thought “it” was, and reveal what “it” really was.

“less like tearing, more like building / less like captive, more like willing
less like breakdown, more like surrender / less like haunting, more like remember

and i feel You here, and You’re picking up the pieces, forever faithful
it seemed out of my hands, a bad situation, but You are able
and in Your hands the pain and hurt look less like scars
and more like character

less like a prison, more like my room / it’s less like a casket, more like a womb
less like dying, more like transcending / less like fear, less like an ending”

sara groves – “less like scars”

there is a lot of wisdom there, and that doesn’t happen overnight.  it takes time and a lot of spiritual maturity to get to the point where you can look back on the road that brought you to the place where you now stand and not only see it as purposeful, but truly believe that every moment was divinely deliberate, even though you couldn’t see it.  as ’08 comes to a close, can you look at what you thought afflicted you and see it as something that empowered you… can you see what looked like a scar and see it as character… intentionally and specifically designed to equip you for what you couldn’t see yet?

i believe 2009 is going to be an amazing and important year.  i strongly believe that if you look through the eyes of faith in ’09, you will see what ’08 was really about.

disturbed

10 10 2008

i am disturbed.

first, there’s this.  louis farrakhan, leader of the nation of islam and silver-tongued deceiver of many, has gone as far as to hail barack obama’s words as the words of “the messiah”.  excuse me?  there are so many things that are disturbing about this.

the only thing more disturbing than that has to be this, a site dedicated to crowning obama as a deity. you must be out of your mind!

as i was reading all these things, this passage from the gospel of luke immediately came to me…

what sorrow awaits you who are praised by the crowds,
for their ancestors also praised false prophets. – luke 6:26

the niv translates it this way…

woe to you when all men speak well of you,
for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets

and the message translation says it like this…

there’s trouble ahead when you live only for the approval of others, saying what flatters them, doing what indulges them. popularity contests are not truth contests—look how many scoundrel preachers were approved by your ancestors! Your task is to be true, not popular.

all this is disturbing on many levels and i can’t get away from it.

i know this isn’t going to make me popular, but i really don’t care.  but i must be honest and say that i have great concern, as a follower of Christ, supporting someone in this capacity who has the glowing adulation of so many who not only do not espouse my views and values, but many of whom have views and values at the far other end of the spectrum.

when i see so many people in morally-bankrupt hollywood practically foaming at the mouth to get obama into office… i’m not going to lie to you… i must ask deeper questions and wonder why.  i must question the motive.  what is lying underneath and driving this seemingly unquenchable passion that they exhibit and I must ask myself…

is my voice synonymous with those whose vehement disdain for anything of virtue is second only to their lust for power, money and greed ?

does oprah winfrey, who can’t seem to make up her mind exactly who it is she serves, represent me?

do i lift my voice in concert with those whose “art” vigorously decries the values that are central to family to say, “i’m with you”?

do these people who day in and day out push the envelope of godlessness, immorality and indecency on a global scale actually speak for me?

i’ll tell you.

hell to the naw!

EDIT:::  for the record, this is not necessarily an anti-obama post, but rather a look at some of the foolishness going around as well as a “people get it together and learn to think and make decisions for yourselves” blog.

just because someone has a hot song or a hot movie does not mean their political opinions carry any more weight than yours do.  find out the issues, get the facts, pray for wisdom, and vote based on your conscience.

which ever way you vote, it needs to be because it is the conviction of your own heart, not because diddy is fresh to def and says “obama”.  it’s wrong when it happens on either side, but i see a lot more abuse and irresponsibility of platform and status when it comes to the entertainment world waving the obama flag high than i do on the other side.  don’t think for a second that folks aren’t banking on the ignorance of the many who wont’ take time to educate themselves on the issues, but will blindly do whatever celebrities day do.  hell, burger king even has a ad campaign featuring diddy based on this entire premise.  “diddy says bk is open late” and the masses come running.  sure, it’s tongue in cheek, but there’s a thread of unfortunate truth in it that should not be winked at.

don’t be a puppet.

selah…

impatience

28 07 2008

found this today on kyle’s blog.  thought i’d share it.

“impatience is a form of unbelief. it’s what we begin to feel when we start to doubt the wisdom of God’s timing or the goodness of his guidance…the opposite of impatience is not a glib, superficial denial of frustration. the opposite of impatience is a deepening, ripening, peaceful willingness either to wait for God where you are in the place of obedience, or to persevere at the pace he allows on the road of obedience – to wait in his place, or to go at his pace.” —john piper

my healer

24 07 2008

if you have not yet heard the buzz surrounding the song “healer” yet, you soon will.

“healer” was written by mike guglielmucci, who wrote it after a terminal cancer diagnosis in 2006. the song was recorded live by hillsong this year, with mike guglielmucci leading, and appears on the upcoming hillsong live worship cd, this is our god, which releases august 5.

there are many praise reports that have been a result of how this song has impacted people’s faith and how God has moved miraculously in people’s lives.  check out this site to see the live performance, the story behind the song and to share prayer requests and praise reports of your own.

i encourage you to share this with everyone you know who is in need of a healer… whether in their body, their emotions, their finances, their relationships, their mind…   Jesus is our healer and he is all we need.

i think it’s very important that we don’t just see Christ as “a” healer, but as “my” healer.  it is very personal.  sure, he is both… but for me to be able to see him as being that personally available to me changes the way i will pursue and grab ahold of him… because he is my healer. that’s really dope if you think about it.

do you believe he is a healer or do you believe he is your healer?  nothing is impossible for him who believes! anything can happen!

simply put

24 07 2008

sometimes i think that we can tend to complicate life, love and faith so much that we lose the simple essence of what’s really important.

i love the song “simply put” from fred hammond‘s latest album “free to worship”.  i wanted to share the lyrics here and encourage you to dig through all the crap that has piled up in your life over the years that has kept you from really knowing and running in the truth of God’s love for you.  fall in love again with the simple fact that the Lord of all creation considers you his own and not only does he love you, but he likes you… i mean, he is really into you!

i don’t really need to tell someone their future
i don’t really have to see the things that can’t be seen
i don’t need another hyped up church encounter
or another clever new years theme
i’m not looking for another goose bump sermon
or a word that leaves me passed out on the floor
my basic needs are really very simple
to know you love me, you like me
and i am Yours

my learning could go on throughout the ages
but i just need the plain and simple of what’s real
i could memorize and quote a million pages
but i’d rather just express the way i feel
i’ve tried so hard to know the deepest revelation
so i could stand and tell the nations what it means
but i found the greatest gift wrapped in your salvation
it’s really much more simple than it seems

so i relinquish all my witty observations
leave my so called sacred knowledge at the door
when you died you answered every single question
you said you love me, you like me
and I am yours

my learning could go on throughout the ages
but i just need the plain and simple of what’s real
i could memorize and quote a million pages
but i’d rather just express the way i feel
all those complicated things have no appeal
so i’d rather keep it simple, keep it real
yes i’m done with all the things that make it
difficult to know

you love me, you like me
and I am yours
