love lockdown

11 09 2008

a lot of folks hate on kanye west because he is so freaking arrogant, and i’ll give them that… he is incredibly freaking arrogant. but the dude is amazing.  he is one of the most progressive, creative and innovative artists in the game… in any genre!  well, ladies and gentlemen, kanye west has raised the bar and flipped the script once again.

after a steady string of innovative hits and ridiculously addictive jams like “jesus walks”, “gold digger” and “stronger”, most would expect mr. west to emerge with yet another blazing musical expedition that would blow minds and move booties everywhere it’s heard.

but instead of butts, this time around it sounds like he is aiming to move minds and challenge his listeners with… *gasp* change!  change is amazing.  change is vital.  if you’re going to stay on top of your game, remain relevant, and be effective in whatever it is you do, you must accept, embrace and be an agent of change.  my homey brewster just wrote a killer blog about change that you should go read right now!

so, instead of putting out the the next club banger, ‘ye has pulled a janet jackson/that’s-the-way-love-goes on ’em and dropped something that no one was expecting… and it’s crazy hot.

“love lockdown” is the new single from kanye’s new album, reportedly titled “808s and heartbreak”, which is due by the end of the year.  he performed it at the vmas this week (one of the only 2 memorable moments in an otherwise lackluster show) and the performance was great.  it’s not what anyone was expecting from him. it is surprisingly and refreshingly low key and subdued compared to many of his other more hyper-edged material.  it sounds like what’s next.  it sounds like innovation.  it’s strength is it’s simplicity.  it sounds like change… and it’s about to be everywhere.

change is beautiful

10 07 2008

this video is actually part of a campaign by the credit unions of washington called change is beautiful.  i’m not endorsing their company or campaign, but i am saying that i love this video and really resonated in me.  the very ideas and concepts that will revolutionize the world around us tomorrow are bouncing around inside some people today.  are you one of them?  change is indeed beautiful.  props to b for posting this.

ever growing, ever changing

27 04 2008

when i first set out with the gideon chronicles blog, my intent was to have outlet exclusively dedicated to some of my more “purposeful” and significant thoughts, musings and/or ramblings. i was feeling like I needed to narrow the focus of my blogging somewhat, and the blog you are reading is the result of that desire.

however, i have lately been thinking about this approach as well as the fact that i actually have 3 blogs… this one, myspace and my music blog, flava in ya ear. my blog and thoughts have been kind of segmented and it has had me thinking about life and how we can tend to segment and compartmentalize our lives, sometimes feeling overwhelmed because of the pressure to keep all the plates spinning, independently of each other. i’ve been thinking lately how absurd it is to think that we have all these different life elements that we try to keep separate from the others as if they don’t feed and flow into and out of each other. i recently heard someone talking about the term “faith life” or “spiritual life” in the context of people using these terms like they are actually separate and independent from the other elements of their life. after all, what parts of our lives aren’t spiritual or faith-centric?

that being said, i am going to be broadening the scope of the gideon chronicles a bit. sometimes i’ll be sharing something particularly purposeful, but i will also be sharing from the other pieces of me and my life that all flow into one another, making me uniquely me. it might be music, art, culture, humor, relationships, love, random thoughts, pictures, stories or any number of other things… but all together, they are the sum total of who i am striving to be and of the life i am learning to walk out every day… ever growing… ever changing…

hope you enjoy the ride…
